Sometimes it’s not so much about where you submit your poetry, but when. That’s because several publications have specific reading periods (that sometimes shift without notice). Today’s spotlight market is currently open to poetry submissions: Black Warrior Review.

Black Warrior Review recently re-opened for submissions on June 1 and will stay open until September 1. The publication is named after the river that borders the campus of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and is known as one of the top publishers of poetry, short stories, and creative nonfiction.
As far as the poetry, the editors say, “We are seeking a poetry of excitement that changes its state of matter from read to read. We are seeking most a poetry we read and walk away changed.” Learn more by reading their guidelines here.

Black Warrior Review uses, like many publications, a Submittable page. Poets can send up to five poems (up to a maximum of 10 pages). Previously published work is not accepted, but simultaneous submissions are welcome.
Poets who are published are paid with a one-year subscription to the publication and a “nominal lump-sum fee.” Reading previous issues is encouraged.
