This week’s Monday Market Spotlight just opened poetry submissions last week, but poets better act fast, because the reading period closes again soon. This week’s spotlight is Virginia Quarterly Review (also known as VQR).

Virginia Quarterly Review recently re-opened for submissions on June 15 and will stay open only until July 12. Founded in 1925, VQR has been publishing fiction, poetry, and essays with “one simple standard in its selection of writers: excellence.”

The editors say, “While we have a long history of publishing accomplished and award-winning authors, we also seek and support emerging writers. A look at one of our latest issues will show you the diversity of the voices we publish.”

Find Hundreds of Great Poetry Markets!

The 2015 Poet’s Market, edited by Robert Lee Brewer, includes hundreds of poetry markets, including listings for poetry publications, publishers, contests, and more! With names, contact information, and submission tips, poets can find the right markets for their poetry and achieve more publication success than ever before.

In addition to the listings, there are articles on the craft, business, and promotion of poetry–so that poets can learn the ins and outs of writing poetry and seeking publication. Plus, it includes a one-year subscription to the poetry-related information on WritersMarket.com. All in all, it’s the best resource for poets looking to secure publication.

Virginia Quarterly Review uses, like many publications (including last week’s spotlight: Black Warrior Review), a Submittable page. Poets can send up to four poems of any length or style. Previously published work is not accepted, but simultaneous submissions are welcome.

Poets who are published are paid $200 per poem, up to four poems. For poems longer than 50 lines, the payment is usually higher.
