Weekly Round-Up: Last Chance for Halloween and NaNoWriMo

Every week our editors publish somewhere between 10 and 15 blog posts—but it can be hard to keep up amidst the busyness of everyday life. To make sure you never miss another post, we’ve created a new weekly round-up series. Each Saturday, find the previous week’s posts all in one place. Writers Digest Logo

It’s the end of October, which means two things are on the horizon: Halloween and NaNoWriMo. And we’re here to help you prepare for both.

In the spirit of Halloween…

Head over to The Writer’s Dig to read Write Like Stephen King: How to Create Scary Monsters, then check out this (fake) rejection letter in response to the classic Dracula by Bram Stoker. The holiday just wouldn’t be the same without these masters of horror.

Still searching for a last-minute costume? Maybe this 1947 Writer’s Digest cover featuring Stan Lee will inspire you to dress up as one of his iconic characters.

Not a fan of the horror genre?

Even if you are, start gearing up for National Novel Writing Month or another 30-day writing challenge in November by reading One Way NaNoWriMo Can Lead to a Lifetime of Better Writing and A High Performance Approach to a 30-Day Writing Challenge.

If you’re taking the poetic route for your 30-day challenge…

Check out Robert Lee Brewer’s Poetic Asides for some inspiration. Try out the trimeric form, the curtal sonnet, or practice writing a card poem.

Not participating in a 30-day writing challenge?

Those of you already at a later stage in the writing process haven’t been forgotten. As always, opportunities abound at Chuck Sambuchino’s Guide to Literary Agents. Check out:

You can also get some tips for editing your novel from Paula Munier’s The Writer’s Guide to Beginnings over at There Are No Rules.

Finally, if you’re planning on a more leisurely November, you might be interested in 4 Great Essays From Jodi Picoult on Writing (did you know the best-selling author used to write a column for Writer’s Digest?), 18 Words You Didn’t Know You Needed, and 6 Things Friends Can Teach Us About Writing (Part 2).
