10 Things in the World of Poetry I Love

One feature I’ve been trying out this year is to write poetry spotlights. It’s been fun focusing on one specific piece of the world of poetry each week. And since we’re about to hit a pause in that series (for April’s poeming), I thought I’d collect the most recent 10 spotlights in one centralized location for people to revisit or find for the first time.

Here are 10 things in the world of poetry I love:

  1. Paul Laurence Dunbar House. Actually, I love Dunbar’s poetry, but his house is pretty cool too.
  2. Poetry Foundation. An amazing advocate for poets everywhere.
  3. AWP Conference. It’s overwhelming; it has issues; but it’s where all the writers and teachers of writing are at, and that’s sweetness.
  4. Hugo House. Anything named after the poet who wrote The Triggering Town has got to be incredible, right?
  5. Berl’s Brooklyn Poetry Shop. A store in Brooklyn dedicated to small press poetry? Sig

  6. National Endowment for the Arts. I really hope this program is not axed (or reduced) when it does so much for the arts in this country in both big and small ways.
  7. Austin International Poetry Festival. Have enjoyed in the past and look forward to seeing folks there next week.
  8. Poetry Hickory. Super fun monthly poetry series nestled in the town of Hickory, North Carolina.
  9. Open Books. Yeah, another poetry-only bookstore, but this one is on the West Coast.
  10. Poetry@Tech. Atlanta reading series hosted by Georgia Tech.
