Poetry@Tech: Poetry Spotlight

For this week’s poetry spotlight, I’m staying close to home with the Poetry@Tech program in Atlanta, Georgia (just down the road from where I live in Suwanee).

As always, I appreciate the poetry spotlight ideas people send my way. Keep them coming at robert.brewer@fwmedia.com with the subject line: Poetry Spotlight Idea.

In addition to the listings, there are articles on the craft, business, and promotion of poetry–so that poets can learn the ins and outs of writing poetry and seeking publication. Located in downtown Atlanta, Poetry@Tech is a poetry program offered through Georgia Tech as the result of the creation of the Margaret T. and Henry C. Bourne, Jr. Chair in Poetry and the H. Bruce McEver Visiting Chair in Writing. Travis Wayne Denton is the McEver Chair in Poetry, and the McEver Chairs in Community Outreach are Katie Chaple, Theresa Davis, and Kodac Harrison. Until very recently, the Bourne Chair was held by Thomas Lux.

In the Atlanta area, Poetry@Tech is known for its large public readings, often providing free copies of poets’ books to early attendees, as well as they’re free community poetry workshops. In the words of Lux: “It will always be our goal to bring poetry to as wide an audience as possible, to recognize poetry for its possibilities in all our lives, and to recognize those involved in the craft of writing poetry—poets as well as spoken word performers, whether accomplished, rising, or beginning—for the artists they are.”

And Poetry@Tech has a wealth of poetry videos on YouTube, here are a few highlights:

  • Natasha Trethewey, Part 1 (and here’s Part 2).
  • Patricia Smith, Part 1 (and again, Part 2).
  • Kurtis Lamkin.
